What causes acne?
Acne results from clogging of hair follicles under the skin.
Factors that influence clogging and acne development include:
- Age: Teenagers and young adults are commonly affected
- Excess sebum or oil production
- Accumulation of dead skin cells
- Bacterial infection of the follicle
- Changes in hormonal levels as noted during puberty or pregnancy
- Certain medications such as corticosteroids and lithium
- Diet: Foods with high sugar content, dairy products , etc may trigger/worsen acne
- Stress
- Family history
- Skin contact with greasy or oily substances
- Friction or pressure on the skin
How long does acne last?
Often it is mild. However, it is estimated that about 3 in 10 teenagers have severe acne bad enough to need treatment to prevent scarring. Untreated acne usually lasts about 4-5 years before settling by itself.
What is pigmentation?
Pigmentation refers to the colouring of the skin.
Skin pigmentation refers to the colour of the skin as a result of melanin. Pigmentation can also be a negative occurrence.
Melanin is responsible for our skin colour.
At times, mainly due to exposure to the sun, a lot of melanin is produced in the skin. This leads to a darkening of the skin, usually around a particular region like the face, arms, and shoulders.
Other factors that may lead to an overproduction of melanin include hormones. Expecting women have reported seeing dark blotches or spots on their neck and face.
Pigmentation is closely related to hyperpigmentation, which is simply an unusual increase in melanin production.
With hyperpigmentation, the spots and blemishes become darker and turn to grayish-black or tan.
What causes pigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair, and eyes their colour. A number of factors can trigger an increase in melanin production, but the main ones are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and skin injuries or inflammation.
Can pigmentation be removed?
Types of hyperpigmentation include age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is a harmless skin condition that people can get rid of using removal techniques such as cosmetic treatments, creams, and home remedies.

Acne treatment FAQs
There are lots of different types of acne and recognising what type of acne you have is key to finding the right treatment to help.
We are able to treat all skin types, during a consultation with one of our practitioners we will be able to assess your skin and decide which treatment will work best. If you have darker skin and are considering laser treatment you will need to have a patch test first. Certain health conditions and medications may mean you are unsuitable for treatment, and these will be discussed with you during your consultation.
The treatments include chemical peels such as Glycolic Acid Peel and a range of products that can be tailored to your skin type including the nurse prescribed OBAGI treatment system.
It is important to remember that acne can be treated but not cured. We recommend that if you are having treatment for acne prone skin then you should maintain them to avoid the risk of acne returning.
Patients with long term acne often opt to continue having treatment in order to manage and control their flare-ups. This doesn’t necessarily have to be the same treatment they started with however, many patients have intense acne treatments to begin with but then top up with alternative treatments that work for them.
Pain levels obviously vary from patient to patient. A chemical peel will have a similar feeling of warmth and tingling of the skin, it should be relatively pain free.
Some patients may find they experience breakouts after treatments, but this doesn’t mean that the treatment is not working. The breakout is often due to your skin clearing the acne causing debris that is clogging your pores and unfortunately it is often the case that your skin may look worse before it gets better. The more treatments you have the less your skin will breakout afterwards, we recommend that you continue with a course of treatment to ensure you get the best results.
Pigmentation treatment FAQs
Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair, and eyes their colour. A number of factors can trigger an increase in melanin production, but the main ones are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and skin injuries or inflammation.
Types of hyperpigmentation include age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is a harmless skin condition that people can get rid of using removal techniques such as cosmetic treatments, creams, and home remedies.
Chemical peels, laser therapy, microdermabrasion, or dermabrasion are all options that work similarly to rid skin of hyperpigmentation. These procedures work to gently remove the top layer of your skin where the dark spots lie. After recovery, dark spots will be lightened, and you will have a more even skin tone.
The hyperpigmentation is a direct result of an increased level of a hormone in your body that results in increased melanin synthesis. Excessive sun exposure can also cause an increase in melanin.
