Dental implant overview

What are dental implants?

Dental Implants are permanent solution to missing teeth, the dental implant acts as an artificial tooth root to offer the same functionality as a normal tooth. A complete implant consists of 3 components: the implant (titanium screw), an abutment (a connecting section) and a crown, bridge or denture (the teeth).

The treatment involves your implant surgeon fixing a titanium screw into the jawbone in a minimally invasive procedure, once this has healed your abutment and crown will be placed. Same day teeth or temporary crowns are available during the healing process. Once your implant has been placed and your crown fitted, with the right care dental implants can last a lifetime.

Why should you replace missing teeth with implants?

Missing teeth or broken teeth can be replaced for both cosmetic, functional and medical reasons. Dental Implants offer a range of benefits as they help to prevent further bone loss, gum disease and improve your bite. Additionally helps to provide a long term fully functional solution, which may make it easier to eat, drink or speak more clearly.

They also offer cosmetic advantages, as they look and feel like natural teeth, and can help improve your smile and confidence. Dental implants are fast becoming a popular solution for damaged or missing teeth, as treatment is highly successful, minimally invasive, does not damage the surrounding teeth and offers a long term solution.

Am I suitable for implants?

Dental Implants are suitable for most adults who have good general health. Some medical conditions may not exclude you from having dental implant treatment, but may require further precautions or treatments to give the best possible results.

Some patients may require treatment such as extractions, periodontal treatment, bone grafts or sinus lift for successful dental implant placement.  This will be assessed and discussed as part of your implant consultation, where you will receive an tailored treatment plan, which will give you an accurate idea of your suitability and any additional requirements for treatment.

If you would like to discuss your suitability further, we offer a free consultation in clinic or over the phone to help answer your questions.

Dental implant process

What does the dental implant procedure involve?

Once you have had your initial assessment and have decided to go ahead with treatment. We will plan and schedule you for any pre-implant treatment outlined in your treatment plan. Depending on the treatment, your body may need time to heal before your dental implant is placed. Once you have healed,  your dental implant will be placed under local anesthetic or sedation depending on your preference, the procedure is minimally invasive and you should not feel any pain.

During the surgery to place the dental implant, your surgeon will make a cut to open your gum and expose the bone, and will then drill a small hole into the bone where the dental implant post will be placed, so that the dental implant can act as a tooth root.

While you are healing from the implant placement procedure, a partial, temporary denture can be placed for appearance, if required. This process may take several months, while your bone fuses and heals around the metal post to provide a stable base for your abutment and crown.

During the abutment placement procedure, your surgeon will reopen your gum to expose the dental implant and attach the abutment, the gum tissue is then closed around the abutment and left to heal for around two weeks before a crown is fitted.

You may choose to have an option which means the abutment is attached to the dental implant during the initial implant placement surgery.

You can find out more about the dental implant and pre-implant procedures with our comprehensive dental implant guide or at your complimentary consultation.

How long does it take to place implants?

The implant process differs from patient to patient and there is no set timetable. At your consultation your implant specialist will discuss with you the required treatment, expected healing time and duration of your full treatment plan.

The dental implant will take 3-6 months to heal, once the abutment is placed this will take 1-2 weeks to heal before a permanent crown is placed. Pre-implant treatment can take 4-12 months to heal before the implant surgery can take place.

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

During your dental implant procedure, you will be under a local anaesthetic and will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure itself. We also offer sedation if you would prefer during your implant placement surgery. As with any dental treatment, some pain and discomfort following treatment can be expected we will advise and help you manage this following your surgery.

Who will perform my dental implant surgery?

While many dentists may place implants, it doesn’t mean they are the best suited to do it. Dental Implants surgery should be conducted by a dental surgeon or implantologist. We recommend you take the time to look into their qualification, reviews and success ratings.

You can and find out more about our 99.8% success rating, dental implant specialists and dental surgeons with our clinician profiles and reviews.

Implant surgery is a minimally invasive dental surgery and will come with some post operative symptoms. You may experience some minor bleeding and pain following surgery, but we will advise you about what to expect, how to manage symptoms and when you may need to return for check up.

You may be required to take antibiotics after the procedure to reduce risk of infection. Your dental implant should offer you a fully functional permanent solution that will last a lifetime with the right care.
